:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Josiah DeGraaf -- Long Live the Ublidek Confederacy! : So, obviously this book has an absolutely gorgeous cover that's to die for. But once you flip past the cover, it also has a pretty great story to boot. Other reviewers on Goodreads have remarked on the influences from Tolkien and Sanderson present in this work, and I noted those as well. Crucially, however, these are influences, not copycats, which allows Lamb to use many of the great techniques of those writers while foraging his own path in this first installment of the epic trilogy(?). - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Roger Eaton -- A promising series debut! : This is one of the most promising new fantasy series in my watchlist. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from L. Doose -- This is AMAZING : I LOVE this book! The worldbuilding is solid enough to be on level with stories like Lord of the Rings, which I know sounds cliché. TSS is reminiscent of LOTR, but is its own story through and through. En so fleshed out that it feels real. The magic system is solid and easily understood, but still outside-the-box. The races are totally unique and I love the plot, the setting, and even the moral questions that Exton finds himself dealing with. The characters are intriguing, eye-catching, and otherwise amazing, with brilliant arcs: Ventar longs to hear from Yashael, but is uncertain that he has the right to ask that of Him. He hopes that everything he does has a lasting difference, but he’s having trouble seeing it. Flash wrestles with a spiritual being he refers to as the Giant, a creature intent on bending Flash to his will. Flash knows he can’t hide behind Exton forever, and will eventually have to fight this battle himself, but he doesn’t know how to start. UmThroodem is good at heart, but his eyes are easily clouded, and he comes close to losing sight of morality a couple of times. Menthril knows he broke En. Now, having determined that it’s unfixable, he intends to find a way to “end its suffering.” Essentially, he’s the villain of the story, but he doesn’t seem to see himself that way. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Gabrielle Pollack -- Relatable characters, deep themes, and cool story world : One of my first thoughts about The Songkiller's Symphony is that Daeus put a ton of effort into his characters. Each one deals with a relatable struggle. Ventar, Flash, Exton, UmThroodem, and all the other mains resound with me on different levels, which I think shows how realistic and honest they are. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Poetic, Complex, and Relatable : I love the poetic prose and engaging descriptions woven throughout this complex story. There is a lot of POV and scene jumping, which can be difficult for some to follow, but once I discovered who everyone was, I think the story flowed well. Some of the names are similar, making it hard to remember who is who, but the descriptions help clear up some confusion in that area. The suspense and plot twists were some of my favorite parts of this book, as well as the relatability of the characters. I found myself going back to reread quite a few different scenes or stanzas of poetry because of the beauty and depth of Daeus's writing style. Definitely recommend! - 4.0 out of 5 stars from L. Johnson -- well-developed fantasy : As a musician, I especially loved the premise of this fantasy. Music links things together; all of creation has a melody that can be harmonized with or otherwise manipulated. Without telling too much of the story, our heroes are attempting to figure out how they can make use of the existing songs to save the world without destroying things (or people) around them. Only a few have this gift or skill, but that doesn’t mean the battles are any less intense or detailed. Lamb appears to have been influenced by Brandon Sanderson in the development of his magic system, and it is a welcome mentoring. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2021 )
